The North Carolina House and Senate passed slew of gun laws that expand the rights of conceal carry permit holders, citizens and those that choose to violate firearm laws in the state.
About a year ago, the largest news station WRAL posted a database where anyone could look up concealed carry permit holders because it was public record who held such licenses. Under the proposed law it would be illegal to post such information, and rightly so. This will prevent such extreme measures of posting and potentially endangering permit holders unnecessarily. Under current law, conceal carry permit holders are not allowed to carry where alcohol is served, stripping designated drivers from their rights to protect themselves. When this bill is signed into law, it will restore those rights to designated drivers, and any other permit holder that decides to go out to for a meal.
Permit holders can also carry in funeral processions, along with being able to keep a firearm secured in a vehicle on college campus’ a rather controversial issue.
North Carolina is a bit different than other states, with that to purchase a handgun you must have a pistol permit issued by your local sheriff for each handgun you purchased. Now each county decides how many permits are issued to each person usually at a nominal fee of $5 per permit. Under the new measure sheriffs from around the state will operate on a more consistent level, with no yearly limit on permits. If a permit application is rejected, the sheriffs office is required to show cause.
One interested part of this bill is that it will increase the amount of information in the state’s background system, especially with the increase awareness around mental health. How this bill will exactly affect current mandatory sentences and such for those that decide to break gun laws has yet to be scene.
